Strength, Longevity and Rural Life: How strength Training help mums thrive

I had the absolute privilege of joining the The Rural Dietitian Podcast for a conversation centred around something I care deeply about women’s health, strength, and longevity through midlife and beyond.

As women, and particularly as rural women and mothers, we often spend so much of our time caring for everyone else:

  • our families

  • our work and businesses

  • our farms and communities

  • the endless mental load that comes with it all

And often, our own health gets pushed to the bottom of the list.

In this episode, we unpack why strength training is one of the most powerful things women can do to support not only their current wellbeing, but also their future health and independence.

We spoke about:

  • Why muscle becomes increasingly important during perimenopause and menopause

  • The critical role strength training plays in supporting bone density and metabolic health

  • How maintaining muscle helps protect against frailty and loss of independence later in life

  • Why many women feel more fatigued and physically depleted during midlife

  • How structured strength training can improve energy, resilience, stress management, and overall wellbeing

  • Simple, practical ways women can begin incorporating strength training into busy lives

One of the things I loved most about this conversation was how honest and relatable it was.

We shared personal experiences, real-life challenges, and practical strategies that women can actually implement—without needing perfection or extreme approaches.

Because supporting your health in midlife is not about doing everything at once.

It’s about building sustainable habits that protect your body long-term.

I also want to say how inspiring Kimmie is. She is doing incredible work supporting rural women while balancing business, motherhood, farm life, and everything in between. Conversations like these are so important because women deserve better support, better education, and better conversations around their health.
